“Drink. All of it.” He let her take her time, patiently letting her take it in sips but not taking the cup away until the wine was gone. Beneath his arm, he felt her slender body trembling with cold, and cursed himself for not having thought earlier of her comfort. It was as cold and damp as a cave in their dismal prison.
Her weak lungs were certain to be adversely affected.
She pushed the empty cup away with clear relief.
“Hor-hi-bhile,” she said with feeling. “S-hour. Prohb-bly p-hoisoned.”
“I can’t think that it is. I don’t know that it would benefit our captors any to have you insensible, especially since you can’t shout the house down. Don’t speak,” he commanded. “Your voice has grown raw along with your cough. How long has it been since you’ve last eaten? Tell me with your hands, Lily.”
She held up six fingers and he immediately stood to fetch her a plate of food.
“This doesn’t look too bad,” he pronounced, having sorted through the greasy offering of meat, fish and vegetables. He selected a slab of beef and two small potatoes for her. “Eat some of this. Our captors apparently want you to remain healthy, at least enough to feed you better than they probably eat themselves. Lily, dear,” he murmured as he set the plate upon the table and moved to pull her to her feet.
“Don’t look so downcast, love. I may not have been much of a rescuer, but I would rather lose my life than let any harm come to you. We’ll only rest until dawn approaches. We can hardly see otherwise, with this heavy fog—and then we shall be quit of this place. I’ll have you safe soon. I promise you that on all I hold dear. Trust me.”
She nodded and let him lead her to the table, moving so stiffly.
“Eat as much as you can,” he said as he pushed the chair beneath her. “I’ll finish whatever you don’t.
Then we’ll rest. Unless our captors begin to keep a better watch on us, we should soon be quit of this nightmare, one way or another.”
